A technician must find which unlabeled cable in a wiring closet runs to a particular office wall jack. Which tool is designed for this?
A+ performance-based questions
Performance-based questions ask you to do a task: set up a router, read command output, place parts or put steps in order. They usually take longer than multiple choice.
| Questions | Up to 90 per exam: multiple choice, drag and drop and performance-based |
|---|---|
| Time | 90 minutes per exam |
| Practice here | Six browser labs, one of them free |
What they look like
- Configure settings on a simulated screen, such as a small office router's wireless security.
- Drag items into place: ports to protocols, parts to slots, steps into order.
- Read output, such as ipconfig, and choose the next command.
Pacing on exam day
- Long tasks often come first. Flag one if it is slow, answer the multiple choice, then come back.
- Never leave a question blank. A wrong answer costs nothing, and a blank cannot score.
What our labs are, and are not
Our labs are browser versions of the workflows the exam describes. They teach and check the steps; they are not the exam's own simulations and they do not replace hands-on time with real hardware.

Questions people ask
How many performance-based questions are on A+?
CompTIA does not fix a number. Expect a few per exam alongside the multiple choice.
Are performance-based questions worth more?
CompTIA does not publish item weights, but they take longer, so plan your time for them.
Can I go back to a performance-based question?
Yes, you can flag questions and return to them before you finish.
