The hazard perception test
Hazard perception is the second part of the theory test. You watch video clips and click when you see a hazard developing. This course does not include clips: it covers the multiple-choice part.
- 14 clips. Each shows an everyday road scene with at least one developing hazard. One clip has two.
- A developing hazard is one that would make you act, such as slowing down or changing direction. A parked car is not one; a parked car that signals and starts to pull out is.
- Up to 5 points a hazard. The sooner you click as it starts to develop, the more you score. You need 44 of 75.
- Clicking constantly scores nothing. A wrong click loses no points, but clicking all the time or in a pattern scores zero for that clip.
- One go at each clip. You cannot review or change your clicks.
Where to practise
Practice clips are licensed by the DVSA. The official hazard perception guide, app and online kit are listed on GOV.UK's revision page, and the rules of the part are on GOV.UK's hazard perception page.
The thinking is the same as our hazard awareness topic: what makes a hazard start to develop, and what to expect next.
