Signs talk in shapes. Circles give orders, triangles warn and rectangles inform. A red ring says what you must not do; a blue circle says what you must do.

Signs giving orders

    Stop and give way

  • GIVEWAY

    Give way to traffic on the major road

  • No entry for vehicles

  • No right turn

  • No U-turns

  • No overtaking

  • Give priority to vehicles from the opposite direction

  • No stopping (clearway)

  • Ahead only

  • Keep left

  • Mini-roundabout

Warning signs

  • Crossroads

  • T-junction

  • Double bend, first to the left

Motorway and information signs

  • One-way traffic

  • Priority over vehicles from the opposite direction

  • About 300 yards to the exit

  • Lane closed: do not drive in it

Road markings

  • Solid line on your side: do not cross, with a few exceptions

  • Box junction: enter only when your exit is clear

  • Crossing ahead: no parking or overtaking

  • No waiting at any time

Know them cold
