How to book the driving theory test
You book the car theory test with the DVSA on GOV.UK. It has two parts, booked and sat together, and you must pass both. We help you get ready for the multiple-choice part.
- Get a provisional licence. You need one to book. You can take the test from your 17th birthday, or from 16 if you get the higher rate of the mobility part of PIP.
- Book it on GOV.UK. A car theory test costs £23. You need your licence number, an email address and a card. Book your theory test.
- Say if you need support. With a reading difficulty, disability or health condition you can ask for help, such as extra time or a voiceover. See what support there is.
- On the day, take your photocard licence and arrive 15 minutes early. Phones and watches go in a locker.
- Sit both parts. You get your result at the centre. A pass gives you a certificate number that lasts 2 years.
- If you fail either part, you take the whole test again, at least 3 working days later. Pass marks and results on GOV.UK.
The two parts
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Multiple-choice questions | 50 questions in 57 minutes. 43 to pass. Three follow a short video. |
| Hazard perception | 14 video clips. Up to 5 points a hazard. 44 of 75 to pass. |
Our course covers the multiple-choice part. For hazard perception, see how it works and where to practise. The full guide is on GOV.UK.
