Plan your dates

How many times have you taken the exam without passing?

The rules the planner uses

  • You have 6 attempts to pass.
  • After 3 failed attempts you must complete remedial education before the fourth.
  • You must wait 15 days after an attempt before you test again.
  • Each attempt needs a new application, a new fee and a new Authorization to Test (ATT), valid for up to 90 days.
  • Your course is valid for 2 years from the month and year you completed it; remedial education does not extend it.

What counts as remedial education

Some states require the traditional refresher course and will not accept continuing education hours, so check with your State EMS Office. You upload the education with your fourth-attempt application.

  • The EMT 20-credit National Competency Component of the National Continued Competency Program, or
  • A State or CAPCE-approved EMT refresher course.

Once you pass

A passed cognitive exam and a state-approved BLS skills competency result each stay valid for 24 months. You then recertify every two years.
