How the time works
The exam is in two sections. You get the whole 5 hours 20 minutes at the start and decide how to split it. After about half the questions you review and submit the first section, and you cannot go back to it. Then you may take the 25-minute break.
Question types
Most questions are multiple choice with one correct answer. The rest are alternative item types: more than one correct option, point and click, drag and drop, and fill in the blank. Every question is scored right or wrong, with no partial credit and nothing deducted for a wrong answer.
On the day
- The FE is given year-round at Pearson test centers.
- Bring your ID and one NCEES-approved calculator.
- The test center gives you reusable booklets and markers for working.
- The handbook is on screen; a 24-inch monitor shows it beside the question.
Scoring
Your result is based on the number of questions you answer correctly, converted to a scaled score that adjusts for small differences between forms. NCEES does not publish the passing score. If you do not pass, a diagnostic report shows your performance in each knowledge area.
