HiSET passing score
Each subtest is scored from 1 to 20. To pass the HiSET you need all three: at least 8 on every subtest, at least 2 out of 6 on the essay and a total of at least 45 out of 100.
| Each subtest | Scored 1 to 20; 8 is the minimum to pass |
|---|---|
| Essay | Scored 1 to 6; 2 is the minimum, on the same date as the Writing questions |
| Total | At least 45 of 100 across the five subtests |
| College and career ready | 15 or more on a subtest, and 4 or more on the essay for Writing |
| Score timing | Computer tests about 3 business days; the Writing essay about 5 |
Why the total matters
Scoring exactly 8 on every subtest gives 40, which is short of 45. So you need at least 5 points above the minimum somewhere, and a strong subtest can carry a weaker one as long as every subtest reaches 8.
Retakes and your best scores
Your Comprehensive Score Report keeps your highest score on each subtest, so you retake only what you need. The Writing questions and the essay must come from the same date. Your state sets how soon and how often you can retake.
