How is the HiSET total calculated?
Add your five subtest scores, each from 1 to 20. The total is out of 100, and you need at least 45. The essay is scored separately, from 1 to 6.
Can a high score on one subtest make up for a low one?
Only for the total. Every subtest still needs at least 8, so a strong subtest can lift the total but cannot cover a subtest under 8.
