How is the IB Maths AA grade worked out?
Each component counts for a fixed share of 100: at HL, Papers 1 and 2 are 30% each, Paper 3 and the IA 20% each; at SL, Papers 1 and 2 are 40% each and the IA 20%. The weighted total is compared with that session's grade boundaries. Averaging paper grades gives the wrong answer.
What did a 7 need in HL Maths AA?
In May 2024 timezone 1 a 7 started at 76 out of 100. In May 2025 the copy we hold gives 73, 71 and 76 for timezones 1, 2 and 3. Boundaries change every session.
Is HL Paper 3 75 minutes or 60 minutes?
75 minutes for 55 marks in current sessions. Older specimen papers print 60 minutes; that timing is historical. The course first examined in 2029 moves Paper 3 to 60 minutes and 50 marks.
Can I use this for Maths AI?
No. Maths AI has different papers and boundaries, and this tool only holds Maths AA data.

IB Diploma Mathematics: analysis and approaches, the current course (examined up to November 2028), SL and HL. Past boundaries: May 2024 timezone 1 for SL and HL, and May 2025 timezones 1 to 3 for HL.
Method
- Each component is turned into its share of 100 using the IB guide's weightings: SL Paper 1 40%, Paper 2 40%, IA 20%; HL Paper 1 30%, Paper 2 30%, Paper 3 20%, IA 20%. HL 75/110 on Paper 1 is worth 30 x 75/110 = 20.5.
- The weighted total is compared with the chosen session's final-grade boundaries, without rounding it up: 72.6 does not count as 73.
- With exactly one component blank, the answer is the smallest whole mark on it that lifts the total to the target grade's boundary. HL with 75 and 75 on Papers 1 and 2 and 16 in the IA needs 45/55 on Paper 3 for a 7 on May 2025 timezone 1 boundaries, 39 on timezone 2 and 53 on timezone 3.
- For May 2024 timezone 1 the IB also printed boundaries for each paper, so each paper's own grade is shown too.
