How Paper 1 is marked

Four questions, each built up from a definition to an 8-mark justified decision. Every mark after the first asks you to use the business in front of you.

QuestionsFour compulsory, 20 marks each
Time1 hour 30 minutes for 80 marks

PartsUsually 2, 4, 6 and 8 marks

The shape of a question

  • 2 and 4 marks: define a term precisely or calculate, then outline two points, each tied to the business.
  • 6 marks: explain two points: name each, apply it, then develop a consequence.
  • 8 marks: weigh advantages against disadvantages, or two factors, and end with a justified decision.

What application means

A point earns its application mark when it uses the business's own details: its product, its numbers, its situation. A point that would fit any business stays at knowledge.
