Insurance license exam

Is the life and health insurance exam hard?

It is broad rather than deep. 145 questions in 150 minutes cover life policies, annuities, health plans, Medicare, taxes and Texas law, and the two parts are scored as one exam, so a weak area pulls the whole score down.

What makes it hard

  • Breadth: the general section alone has nine outline sections, from annuity payout options to coordination of benefits.
  • Close terms: representations and warranties, cancelable and guaranteed renewable, elimination and probationary periods. A question often turns on one word.
  • Numbers: grace periods, claim deadlines, COBRA months and simple coinsurance arithmetic.
  • State law: 30 of the 130 scored questions are on the Texas Insurance Code, which general study guides do not cover.
  • Pretest questions: 15 of the 145 do not count, and you cannot tell which.

What makes it easier

The Texas Department of Insurance publishes the content outline with the number of questions from every section, so you know where the marks are. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, and a candidate who does not pass can schedule a new exam within one day.

How to prepare

Learn the outline section by section, then practice under time. Start with the free diagnostic: your score in each area shows where to begin. This is exam practice, not approved pre-licensing education.
