Dana passed her initial knowledge test in February 2025. Her drone has anti-collision lighting visible for 3 statute miles. A client wants exterior photos of a hotel at 9:30 p.m., well after civil twilight. What extra approval does part 107 require for the night part of the job?
Is the Part 107 test hard?
Most people pass: the FAA reports an 82.96% pass rate for 2025. But the average score was 79.31%, less than 10 points above the 70% pass line, so a few weak topics are enough to fail.
| Pass rate, 2025 | 82.96% |
|---|---|
| Average score, 2025 | 79.31% |
| Passing score | 70% (42 of 60) |
| Retest after failing | 14 days later |
What makes it harder than it looks
- Regulations are 48% of the test, and the questions are applied scenarios, not definitions.
- Sectional chart reading: airspace altitudes, obstacles and airport data blocks, now on chart images that are not in the printed supplement.
- Weather reports (METARs and TAFs) use codes most new pilots have never seen.
- Three choices per question means wrong options are close to the right one.
How to prepare
Find your weakest area first with a diagnostic, learn the rules behind it, then practice with worked answers. Before booking, sit a full 60-question practice test at the real 2-hour pace.
Try 3 questions
Refer to the chart excerpt. A contractor wants to inspect a roof at point A, inside the dashed blue circle, at 250 feet AGL. Which statement is correct?
A fixed-wing small UA enters a level, coordinated 45 degree bank. What are the load factor and the approximate increase in stall speed?

Questions people ask
What happens if I fail?
You can retest after 14 days. Bring the failed test report to the testing center; no instructor endorsement is needed.
Which topic is the biggest?
Regulations, at 48% of the questions. Operations is 25% and airspace 20%.
Do I need flight experience?
No. There is no flight-time requirement for a first-time remote pilot: you pass the knowledge test, then apply in IACRA.
