How to write the 10-mark extended answer

One 10-mark question with no parts, in Section A or Section B. It asks for depth: two or three strategies or ideas, each developed for the business, and a judgement you justify.

A plan for 10 marks

  • One opening sentence that answers the question and names the strategies or ideas you will use.
  • A paragraph for each of two or three strategies: what it is, how it works for this business, its benefit and its limitation.
  • Links across the course where they help: the motivation effect of a change in operations, the stakeholders a cost cut affects.

Evaluate is a judgement

A full description of strategies stays in the middle of the range. Say how well each would work, for whom and under what conditions, and finish with a judgement and the reason for it.

Questions people ask

How long should the extended answer be?

Long enough for two or three developed strategies and a judgement, usually about a page. Plan it in reading time and leave about 15 minutes to write it.

Do I need a conclusion?

Yes, when the command term asks for a judgement (evaluate, justify, to what extent). End with a decision and the reason for it.
