AAT sets no entry requirements, so it is designed for beginners. The challenge is accuracy: every assessment needs 70% to pass, and most marks are for exact figures and entries.
Pass mark
70% in every assessment
Typical study time
Around one year; possibly as little as six months
Guided learning hours
255 (total qualification time 340 hours)
Entry requirements
None set by AAT
What makes it demanding
The pass mark is high: AAT maintains 70% across all assessments, and every assessment must be passed.
Most marks are for exact answers: a VAT figure, a daybook total or a journal line is right or wrong.
The clock: each unit assessment is 1 hour 30 minutes, so 100 marks leaves about 54 seconds a mark.
The Business Environment synoptic assessment includes written answers and draws on the other units.
What AAT recommends
AAT recommends starting with a good standard of English and maths, and suggests its Skillcheck to find the right starting level. Students who are unsuccessful can re-sit; the qualification has no re-sit restrictions, and only the highest result counts towards the grade.
How to make it easier
Practise each learning outcome until the routine tasks are automatic, then sit full timed papers so 90 minutes feels normal. The diagnostic shows which outcome to start with.
