Qualifying for the AIME in 2027

For 2027 the MAA sets fixed thresholds instead of percentages: a score of 100 or more on the AMC 10, or 85 or more on the AMC 12, qualifies a student to register for the AIME, if they meet the other eligibility rules.

What a qualifying score takes

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 give 6 points for each right answer, 1.5 for each blank and 0 for each wrong one. So 100 on the AMC 10 needs, for example, 16 right and 4 blank (96 + 6 = 102), while 15 right and 5 blank is 97.5, just short. On the AMC 12, 85 is reached with 13 right and 5 blank (78 + 7.5 = 85.5).

AMC 8: 1 point for each right answer, 0 for a blank or a wrong one, so the top score is 25.
AMC 10 and AMC 12: 6 points for each right answer, 1.5 for each blank and 0 for each wrong one, so the top score is 150.

What the AIME is

The AIME has 15 questions in two parts, each with a 90-minute time limit: 8 questions in the first part and 7 in the second. Every answer is a whole number from 0 to 999. In 2027 it is a computer-based exam at Pearson testing centers on February 5 or 6, and only students aged 13 or older on the day can take it.

How to register

When AMC 10 and AMC 12 scores are finalized, usually in mid-December, the MAA emails a personal invitation to each qualifying student at the address in the competition portal. The student then books a center and time with Pearson and pays the fee there. The MAA says financial help is available for families who need it.
