AMC 10 vs AMC 12: format and dates

Both are 25-problem, 75-minute multiple-choice competitions, held on the same days in November. The AMC 10 is for grade 10 and below; the AMC 12 is for grade 12 and below and adds trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry.

Side by side

AMC 10: grade 10 and below, under 17.5 years old on the day. Elementary algebra, basic geometry, area and volume formulas, elementary number theory and elementary probability.
AMC 12: grade 12 and below, under 19.5 years old on the day. The full high school curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry. No calculus.
Both: 25 multiple-choice problems in 75 minutes, five choices, one correct, no calculator.

Scoring

AMC 8: 1 point for each right answer, 0 for a blank or a wrong one, so the top score is 25.
AMC 10 and AMC 12: 6 points for each right answer, 1.5 for each blank and 0 for each wrong one, so the top score is 150.

A and B dates

Each competition has an A and a B version. Students may take an A competition on November 5 and a B competition on November 13, 2026, but not the AMC 10 and the AMC 12 on the same day. In the digital competition, the clock stops the paper at 75 minutes.
