What the AMC 8 covers
The MAA describes the AMC 8 as middle school mathematics: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, and interpreting graphs and tables. Some of the later problems may touch beginning algebra, such as linear or quadratic functions and coordinate geometry.
How to use a practice test
- Sit it in one go on the 40-minute clock, with no calculator: calculators are not allowed in the real competition.
- Answer every problem. A blank scores the same as a wrong answer on the AMC 8, so a guess can only help.
- This practice test ranks its problems from easiest to hardest. Bank the early ones carefully before spending long on the last few.
- Afterwards, read the solution to every problem you missed or guessed, then practice that area.
Who can take the AMC 8
Students in grade 8 and below who are under 15.5 years old on the day of the competition. Students do not register with the MAA directly: a school, college, math circle or learning center registers as a competition site, and students sign up through it. A student may take the AMC 8 once a year.
