How is the AP Calculus exam scored?
Multiple choice earns a point for each right answer, with no penalty for wrong ones. Each of the six free-response questions is scored out of 9 by readers following a scoring guide. College Board combines the two halves, each worth 50%, and sets the 1 to 5 cut scores each year.
What changes in May 2027?
Multiple choice drops from 45 to 42 questions (29 without a calculator, 13 with one), and the exam from 195 to 190 minutes. The six 9-point free-response questions stay.
What composite did a 5 need in 2012?
67 of 108 on the 2012 AB practice exam and 68 of 108 on the 2012 BC practice exam. Those bands belong to those forms, not to later exams.
Why not give an exact 2027 score?
Because no official 2027 conversion exists. Any calculator that shows one is guessing; this one says how it estimates and how wide the doubt is.

What it does
Turn practice-exam scores into College Board's official 2012 composite, or an honest estimate for the May 2027 format.
AP Calculus AB and BC. Two modes. The 2012 mode is for College Board's released 2012 practice exams (45 multiple choice, six free-response questions of 9 points). The 2027 mode is for practice in the May 2027 format (29 plus 13 multiple choice, six 9-point free-response questions).
Method
- 2012 mode: the composite is 1.2 times the multiple-choice questions right plus the free-response points, rounded to the nearest whole number with halves rounded up, out of 108. College Board's 2012 worksheet for each course gives the AP score for every composite, and we read it from there.
- 2027 mode: College Board has not published a composite or cut scores for the new format. We rescale your multiple choice from 42 questions to 45, apply the 2012 formula, and read the 2012 bands for your course. That is an estimate on an old scale, labeled as one.
- Beside it we show a practice index from 0 to 100: 35 times your Part A share plus 15 times your Part B share plus 50 times your free-response share, the part weights College Board publishes for 2027. It measures progress; it is not an AP score.
- Within 2 composite points of a band edge, we say the result could fall on either side.
