GCSE equivalent
Is Functional Skills Maths Level 2 equal to a GCSE?
It is at the same level as a GCSE at grade 4 to 9. It is not the same qualification: it covers practical maths, not the full GCSE course. Whether it counts depends on who is asking.
Where it is usually accepted
- Jobs. Many employers ask for "Level 2 maths" and accept either.
- Apprenticeships. Level 2 Functional Skills meets the maths requirement for apprenticeships at Level 3 and above.
- Nursing degrees. Many accept it in place of GCSE maths, including courses at Surrey and King's College London. Some do not, so check your exact course.
Where it often is not
- Teacher training. Most providers want GCSE maths or their own equivalency test.
- Some university courses. A few ask for GCSE maths by name.
Before you book
Ask the employer, college or university one question: "Do you accept Functional Skills Maths Level 2 for this course or role?" A yes in writing is all you need.
