Non-calculator

The non-calculator section

A quarter of the marks, done first, with no calculator. Pearson and City & Guilds give 25 minutes; NCFE and Open Awards give 30.

The four methods it leans on

Multiplying

Split one number: 27 × 16 = 27 × 10 + 27 × 6 = 270 + 162 = 432.

Dividing

Take away chunks: 364 ÷ 14 is 20 lots (280), then 6 lots (84), so 26.

Percentages

Build from 10% and 5%: 15% of £60 is £6 + £3 = £9.

Fractions

Make the bottoms match: 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4 = 1¼.
