GED Math practice test

Mathematical Reasoning takes 115 minutes. It tests basic math, geometry, basic algebra, and graphs and functions, mostly in real-life problems.

Time115 minutes, with a short break between the two parts
TopicsBasic math, geometry, basic algebra, graphs and functions
CalculatorOn-screen calculator in part 2; your own TI-30XS allowed at a test center
Formula sheetGiven on screen and at the test center
Question typesMultiple choice, fill in the blank, drag and drop, select an area, drop-down

What the questions ask

  • Basic math: fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, rates and order of operations, often with money.
  • Basic algebra: writing and solving equations and inequalities, systems of two equations, factoring and quadratics.
  • Graphs and functions: slope, intercepts, equations of lines and reading function values.
  • Geometry: perimeter, area, surface area and volume, and the Pythagorean theorem, with the formula sheet.
  • Data: mean, median, mode, range, probability and reading charts.

How to win marks

Write down what the question asks for before you calculate. The first part has no calculator, so practice fractions and percents by hand. On the formula sheet, the skill is choosing the formula and putting the right number in each place.

Questions people ask

Do you get a calculator on the GED Math test?

Yes, for part 2. An on-screen calculator is built in, and at a test center you may bring your own TI-30XS. The first part of the test has no calculator.

Do I need to memorize formulas for GED Math?

No. A formula sheet is given on screen and at the test center. You do need to know which formula fits the problem and how to use it.
