The GED passing score
You need 145 or higher on each of the four subjects. Each subject is scored on its own, from 100 to 200.
| Passing score | 145 on each subject |
|---|---|
| Score range | 100 to 200 on each subject |
| College Ready | 165 to 174 |
| College Ready + Credit | 175 to 200 |
How the passing score works
The 145 is per subject, not an average. A 160 in one subject cannot make up for a 140 in another; you would retake the 140 subject only.
Higher score levels
- College Ready (165 to 174): you may qualify for waivers from college placement tests or developmental classes.
- College Ready + Credit (175 to 200): your skills could qualify for up to 10 college credit hours.
Retakes
At a test center, you get two retests of a subject that you can schedule at any time. On the online exam, one retake is allowed before a 60-day wait. Your state may add its own rules.

Questions people ask
What is a passing score on the GED?
145 on each of the four subjects: Math, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.
Can a practice test tell me my GED score?
No practice test can give you an official GED score. Practice shows which subjects and skills need work; the scaled score comes only from the real test.
