How to study for the GED
Start with a short diagnostic, put most of your time into one subject at a time, and book each subject test when your timed practice is steady.
| Start with | A diagnostic across all four subjects |
|---|---|
| Study | One subject at a time; they are separate tests |
| Practice | Timed tests at about the real pace |
| Book | Each subject when you are ready, in any order |
A plan that works
- Take the free diagnostic to see which subject needs the most work.
- Pick one subject. Work one skill at a time: a short lesson, then practice until you get it right without help.
- Sit a timed practice test for that subject, review every miss and repeat the skill it points to.
- Book that subject, then move to the next. Many people start with the subject they feel best in.
Make it fit your life
Short daily sessions beat long weekend ones. Twenty minutes on a phone at lunch, every day, adds up to more practice than one tired evening a week.

Borrow a Drill, Not Just a Book
The Riverside Public Library now lends more than books. Since March, cardholders have been able to check out power drills, sewing machines, ladders and even a pressure washer from the new Tool Library on the lower level.
Borrowers must be 18 or older and have a library card in good standing. To borrow a tool, bring your card to the Tool Library desk. If it is your first time borrowing a power tool, you then watch a ten-minute safety video, and only after that does the staff member check the tool out to you. Tools may be kept for one week. At the end of that week, a tool may be renewed once if no one is waiting for it.
Staff report that the drills and the carpet cleaner are borrowed most often. Many borrowers say they needed a tool only once, for a single repair, and did not want to buy one. The library plans to add gardening tools in the spring, chosen from a survey of patrons.
Light and Plant Growth
A student wanted to know whether the color of light affects how tall bean plants grow. She planted 12 bean seeds in identical pots with the same soil. She put 4 pots under red light, 4 under blue light and 4 under green light. Each pot received 50 mL of water every other day, and all pots were kept at 22°C. After three weeks she measured the height of each plant.
Average height after three weeks: red light 18 cm, blue light 21 cm, green light 9 cm.

Questions people ask
How long does it take to study for the GED?
It depends on your starting point and how much time you have each week. A diagnostic shows the gap. Because each subject is separate, you can pass one at a time as you go.
Which GED subject should I take first?
Many people start with the subject they feel strongest in, to build confidence, then give the most time to their weakest subject.
