The Casper test format
Casper is an open-response situational judgement test run by Acuity Insights. You answer short real-world scenarios in your own words: first on video, then by typing. There is never a single correct answer.

The two sections

The video response section comes first. There is an optional 10-minute break after it, and an optional 5-minute break after the first 4 typed response scenarios.
Video-based and word-based scenarios
Every scenario gives you a situation, then asks how you would respond. Each starts with an optional 30-second reflection period. What differs is how the situation is shown.
- Video-based: a role for you (for example, “you are a friend”) and a short video scene. In the video response section a 10-second countdown runs before recording starts, with your role shown again.
- Word-based: a written question, statement or scenario.
The scenarios are about everyday interpersonal and professional dilemmas, not about the program you are applying to.
Rules and setup
- Answer each scenario in its required format. You cannot switch between video and typing.
- Speech-to-text tools are not allowed unless approved as a testing accommodation.
- Take the test on a laptop or desktop in the latest Chrome or Firefox, with a working webcam and microphone. Phones, tablets and Safari are not supported.
- Reserve a test date and time in advance, at least 3 days ahead, so you have time for the system check and the practice test.
- Once the test has started, all sections must be completed.

Questions
How many scenarios are on the Casper test?
11 in the standard test for the 2026 to 2027 cycle: 4 video response scenarios first, then 7 typed response scenarios. Each has two open-ended questions.
How long is the Casper test?
About 65 to 85 minutes, including two optional breaks: 10 minutes after the video response section and 5 minutes after the first 4 typed response scenarios.
How long do you get to answer?
One minute to record each video answer, with the two questions shown one at a time. In the typed section, 3.5 minutes for both questions of a scenario, shown together.
Is there a shorter version?
Yes. Australian teacher education programs use a shorter format for 2026 to 2027: 8 scenarios (2 video response, then 6 typed response), one optional 10-minute break, and 45 to 65 minutes in all.
Can I type instead of recording a video answer?
No. Each scenario must be answered in its required format, and switching is not allowed. Speech-to-text tools are not allowed unless approved as a testing accommodation.
