The numbers behind the feeling

  • Oxford: about 1 in 3

Oxford interviews about 10,000 of more than 23,000 applicants for about 3,300 places.

  • Cambridge: about 1 in 4 pooled

In January 2026, 1,060 applicants in the winter pool, about 1 in 4, were offered a place by a different college.

  • Number of interviews

Cambridge says how many interviews you have does not relate to how strong your application is.

Why it felt hard

Tutors keep asking until you reach the edge of what you know, because that is where they see how you think. Oxford says they are not trying to catch you out, and that there is often more than one right way to answer.

So a long silence, a wrong turn or a hint you needed is normal. What counts is what you did next: whether you used the hint, said your reasoning aloud and kept going.

What to do before decision day

  1. Report anything that affected you

If illness or other circumstances affected the interview, tell the college as soon as possible. Oxford cannot consider circumstances it hears about after decisions are made.

  2. Keep your email open

Oxford may invite you to a second college with 24 hours' notice. Cambridge colleges may phone or email in January about a pool interview.

  3. Keep the interview to yourself

Both universities forbid sharing interview content. Breaking Oxford's code of conduct can cost you an offer.

  4. Keep your other choices strong

Reply to other offers as normal and keep working towards your grades.

  5. If the answer is no

Ask your Oxford college for feedback before 15 February 2027. Cambridge says applying again does not make you less likely to get in.
