Pharmacist licensing exam

Is the NAPLEX hard?

It is long and it is clinical. 225 questions in 6 hours, most of them patient cases, and you cannot go back once you confirm an answer. NABP reports that 86.8% of 2025 graduates of accredited US schools passed on their first attempt, and 75.9% of 2024 graduates.

What makes it hard

  • Stamina: 225 questions over 6 hours, at about 96 seconds each.
  • Patient cases: most questions give a profile or medical record, and the answer depends on reading it closely.
  • No going back: once you confirm an answer you cannot return to it, so a stalled case costs time you need later.
  • Calculations: doses, clearance, infusion rates, concentrations and pharmacokinetics appear on their own and inside cases, with only an on-screen calculator.
  • Breadth: 40% of scored questions are on assessment and treatment planning across every therapeutic area.

What makes it easier

NABP publishes the content outline with the share of questions in each area, so you know where the marks are. 25 questions are unscored pretest items, and there is no scaled score to chase: the result is Pass or Fail against a fixed standard.

How to prepare

Make calculations automatic first, because they are the most checkable marks and they recur inside cases. Then work through patient cases by therapeutic area, and finish with full timed practice exams that make you answer in order. Start with the free diagnostic: your score in each area shows where to begin.
