A comparison, not a cutoff. College Board does not print which graduating years the SAT-takers group covers; it describes them as the last three classes. Each college's own middle 50% says more about fit.

Questions people ask

Why are there two SAT percentiles?

College Board reports both. The SAT User percentile compares you with students who take the test; the Nationally Representative percentile includes students who do not, so it is higher at every score.

What is the average SAT score?

The class of 2025 averaged 1029 (Reading and Writing 521, Math 508), counting each student's most recent score, in College Board's 2025 annual report.

Is a 99th percentile score enough for a top college?

No score guarantees admission. Compare your score with each college's own middle 50% range instead of a national percentile.

How we work this out

What it does

See the percentile for any SAT total or section score, for recent SAT takers and for all US 11th and 12th graders.

Every SAT total from 400 to 1600 and every section score from 200 to 800, in steps of 10, from College Board's published percentile table, plus the 2025 graduating class average.

Method

  1. Your score is looked up in College Board's table. Nothing is interpolated: every score has its own published row.
  2. The SAT User percentile compares you with SAT takers from the last three graduating classes. A 1400 is the 93rd.
  3. The Nationally Representative percentile compares you with all US 11th and 12th graders, including students who never take the SAT. A 1400 is the 97th.
  4. College Board prints the extremes as 99+ and 1-; we keep them that way rather than inventing decimals.
