Each paper has its own pass mark. The SRA does not publish it; your own result is the only exact way to find it.
Questions people ask
Is 300 out of 500 the same as 60%?
No. 300 is wherever the paper's raw pass mark falls, so it moves with the paper. In the SRA's own example the pass mark is 100 out of 180 (56%), and candidates' July 2025 results imply pass marks of about 51% to 54% of questions.
What percentage do you need to pass SQE1?
There is no fixed percentage. Before 2024 the SRA published raw pass marks of 52% to 57% of questions. Since January 2024 it publishes only the scaled pass mark of 300, and each paper's raw pass mark is set by standard setting.
How many questions are in SQE1 from January 2027?
170 per FLK, down from 180, including for resitting candidates. Enter 170 as the number of questions for a 2027 paper. Your result can show fewer if questions were removed from scoring.
Why does my result show fewer than 180 questions?
The SRA can remove a question from scoring after the exam, for example if it did not work as intended. Use the number your result gives, because the scale is drawn to that number.
Can two people on the same day have different pass marks?
Yes. SQE1 is sat over several days and papers can differ. A date does not identify the paper, which is why a decoded pass mark describes your paper only.

How we work this out
What it does
Turn a raw mark into a scaled score out of 500, or find the raw pass mark your own result implies.
SQE1 FLK1 and FLK2 since January 2024, when scores moved to 0 to 500 with a pass mark of 300. Papers have 180 questions up to July 2026 and 170 from January 2027; your result can show fewer if the SRA removed questions from scoring.
Method
- The SRA scales each paper with two straight lines: 0 correct is 0, the paper's raw pass mark is 300 and full marks is 500. Below the pass mark b, scaled = 300 x raw / b. Above it, scaled = 300 + 200 x (raw - b) / (N - b). The result is rounded to a whole number, halves up.
- The SRA's own example (180 questions, pass mark 100) gives 80 correct = 240, 100 = 300 and 120 = 350. Our calculation reproduces all three exactly.
- To decode your result we try every whole-number pass mark from 1 to N - 1 and keep each one that turns your raw mark into your exact scaled score. For example, 112 out of 180 scaled to 345 fits only a pass mark of 92 (51.1%).
- When you do not know the pass mark, we use the range implied by July 2025 results that candidates posted publicly with their raw marks: 7 people per FLK who stated how many questions were scored. That gives 92 to 98 out of 180 for FLK1 and 92 to 96 for FLK2. For a 170-question paper we keep the same share of questions.
- The one score shown is the middle of the scaled scores the published pass marks allow.

The SRA’s worked example
The SRA illustrates scaling with a 180-question paper whose pass mark is 100. Its three published points (80 to 240, 100 to 300, 120 to 350) sit on these two lines. A real paper’s pass mark is different and is not published.
