What the questions ask

  • Conventions: spelling, punctuation and sentence boundaries, such as comma splices and fragments.
  • Knowledge of language: subject and verb agreement, pronouns, tense, modifiers, formal and informal register, transitions and paragraph order.
  • Vocabulary and writing: prefixes, roots and suffixes, meaning from context, and the stages of the writing process.

How to win marks

Find the true subject before you choose a verb: the box of gloves is on the shelf. A comma alone never joins two sentences. With one minute a question, practice against the clock.
