GRE test format and timing

The GRE General Test takes about 1 hour 58 minutes: one essay, then four timed multiple-choice sections. ETS introduced this shorter format on 22 September 2023.

The five sections

SectionQuestionsTime
Analytical Writing: Analyze an Issue1 task30 min
Verbal Reasoning, section 11218 min
Verbal Reasoning, section 21523 min
Quantitative Reasoning, section 11221 min
Quantitative Reasoning, section 21526 min

The essay always comes first. The Verbal and Quant sections follow in any order. The first section of each measure is of average difficulty; the second is easier or harder depending on how you did in the first. Inside a section you can skip, mark questions, go back and change answers.

Verbal question types

  • Text Completion: a passage of one to five sentences with one to three blanks. One blank has five choices; two or three blanks have three choices each. Every blank must be right.
  • Sentence Equivalence: one blank, six choices; pick the two that give sentences alike in meaning.
  • Reading Comprehension: passages and short arguments, with one-answer, select-all-that-apply and select-a-sentence questions.

Quant question types

  • Quantitative Comparison: decide whether Quantity A or B is greater, they are equal, or it cannot be determined.
  • Multiple choice: one answer from five, or select one or more.
  • Numeric Entry: type an integer, a decimal or a fraction.
  • Data Interpretation: two or three questions on one table or graph.

Quant sections have an on-screen calculator. The old Analyze an Argument essay and the unscored section were dropped when the test was shortened.
