Questions people ask

How accurate is a short SAT diagnostic?

It gives a range, not a single number. Twenty questions are enough to tell roughly where you are and what to study first. A full-length adaptive practice test is more precise.

Is it adaptive like the real SAT?

Yes, in the same way. Each section's second part is harder or easier depending on how you did on the first, as Bluebook routes its second module.

Do I need an account?

No account to take it. A free account shows your result, keeps your answers and explains every question.

Can I use a calculator?

Yes, on Math. Desmos is built into the real test; open it in another tab while you work.

How we work this out

What it does

20 adaptive questions. Your score range and where to start.

The digital SAT's two sections: 10 Reading and Writing questions, then 10 Math questions, across all eight College Board content domains.

Method

  1. Each section has two parts of five questions. The first part mixes easy, medium and hard questions; three or more right sends you to a harder second part, otherwise to an easier one, as the real test routes its second module.
  2. Every question is original and was solved by an independent reviewer before we used it. Each carries our difficulty rating from 1 (easy) to 5 (very hard).
  3. Your answers and those ratings give a likely position among SAT takers. College Board's SAT User percentile ranks turn that position into a section score range.
  4. The range covers the middle 80% of where your score is likely to be. The total adds the two sections' uncertainty, so it is narrower than adding their ends.
  5. The areas to start on are where you dropped the most questions against your own estimate, weighted by each domain's share of the real test.
