HESI A2 Math

The Math section is practical arithmetic: fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, conversions, Roman numerals and 24-hour time, often in health-care settings.

What the questions ask

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Convert between fractions, decimals and percents, and find a percent of an amount or a percent change.
  • Set up proportions: if 2 tablets hold 250 mg, how much do 5 hold?
  • Convert metric units (g, mg, L, mL) and household units with a given conversion.
  • Read and write Roman numerals and convert between military and standard time.

How to score points

Write what the question asks for before you calculate. Percent change divides by the starting amount, and in a conversion the units must cancel. Work by hand so you are ready whatever tools your test center provides.

Questions people ask

Is HESI A2 math hard?

The math is arithmetic and basic algebra, not advanced topics. Most lost points come from fraction steps, percent change and unit conversions, so practice those.

Do I need to memorize conversions?

Know the metric steps (1 g = 1,000 mg, 1 L = 1,000 mL) and 24-hour time. Our questions give any other conversion in the question.
