Questions people ask
How is the enhanced ACT Composite calculated?
It is the average of your English, Math and Reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole number, with a half rounding up. English 30, Math 31 and Reading 32 give a Composite of 31. Science is scored separately and is not part of it.
Why does ACT not score some questions?
Each section includes questions ACT is trying out for future tests. On the enhanced online tests that is 10 of 50 in English, 4 of 45 in Math, 9 of 36 in Reading and 6 of 40 in Science. The scoring key for each practice test lists them.
How many questions can I miss for a 36?
It depends on the section and the test. On Practice Test 1 English, only all 40 scored questions right converts to a 36; 38 or 39 right is a 35. Choose a test and open the table under the chart to see every row.
Is my practice score what I will get on test day?
Not exactly. Every test date has its own conversion table. A practice score is a good guide to where you are, not a promise.

How we work this out
What it does
Turn questions right on an official enhanced ACT practice test into section scores and a Composite, using ACT's own table for that test.
The four official enhanced ACT online practice tests ACT published for 2026 (English, Math, Reading and Science), with ACT's US ranks for tests from September 2026 to August 2027.
Method
- Your questions right in each section are looked up in ACT's conversion table for the test you took. On Practice Test 1, 30 scored Math questions right is a 28.
- ACT does not score every question: 10 in English, 4 in Math, 9 in Reading and 6 in Science are field-test questions, listed in each test's scoring key. Leave them out and the answer is exact.
- If you counted every question, we cannot know how many of your right answers were unscored, so we show every possible score: with k right out of N questions of which S are scored, between max(0, k - (N - S)) and min(k, S) scored questions were right. On Practice Test 1, 40 of 50 in English gives 24 to 36.
- If you do not know which test you took, the answer is the range across all four tables for the same number of scored questions right.
- The Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading, rounded to the nearest whole number, with a half rounding up (ACT's rule). Science is reported on its own.
- The US rank beside the Composite is ACT's published rank for that score.
