Graduate reasoning tests

Numerical reasoning test practice

Tables, charts and money. Work out the base, read the units, keep the chain short.

Typical length16 to 20 questions
Typical time20 to 25 minutes
CalculatorUsually allowed
Answer formatMultiple choice or typed

What the questions look like

A table or chart of business data, then four or five questions on it. Each asks for one figure: a percentage change, a share, a rate, a currency amount or a comparison.

Where marks go

  • Dividing by the wrong base: the change over the new value instead of the old.
  • Missing a unit: a column headed £000 or thousands.
  • Confusing percentage points with percentage change.
  • Averaging averages from groups of different sizes.

Questions people ask

How hard is a graduate numerical reasoning test?

The maths is GCSE level: percentages, ratios and averages. The difficulty is the clock and the data: about a minute a question, with tables to read first.

Can I use a calculator?

Most online numerical tests allow one. Check your invitation, and practise with the one you will use.

How should I practise?

Learn the four or five calculations that come up most, then practise them on unfamiliar tables under a clock, and review every mistake by type.
